Neuromas are painful growths of the nerve. They will usually cause burning pain and sometimes numbness associated with the lesser digits, most usually focused to the third and fourth digits of the foot. These conditions are caused by compression of bones on the nerve, causing the nerve to become larger and making symptoms worse. High-heel shoes and shoes with a narrow toe box will usually aggravate these conditions.
We at Foot & Ankle Associates, LLP attempt to treat these conditions conservatively. Generally, orthotics in combination with sclerotherapy, which is an alcohol solution that will sometimes desensitize this problem, are used over a period of several weeks. These will sometimes give long-term to permanent improvement of the condition without the need for surgery. Only in very few cases, not able to be treated conservatively, will surgical intervention be considered. The doctors of Foot & Ankle Associates, LLP are very well versed in the treatment of this painful condition and would be happy to evaluate and present options to you.
