Plantar Fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a thick band of ligamentous tissue that starts on the bottom of the heel and extends to the ball of the foot. The plantar fascia becomes strained usually due to abnormal foot mechanics resulting in pain. Often the pain is worse with the first step out of bed or initially standing after a period of sitting.
Treatments include :custom orthotics, stretching exercises, night splints as well as anti-inflammatories. If conservative treatments fail consideration for a noninvasive treatment such as ESWT(extracorporeal shock-wave therapy) and or surgery.
