Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy is a surgical procedure to address chronic plantar fasciitis when conservative treatments have failed.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in either a surgical Center or Hospital. Generally, the anesthesia utilized is IV (intravenous) sedation and local anesthetic.
During the operation the doctor will make 2, ½" incisions on each side of your heel. A special scope is placed underneath the plantar fascia. The doctor can now visualize the plantar fascia and typically a 2 cm segment is cut near the heel bone. The skin is then sutured and sterilely dressed.
Initially, you will be non-weightbearing for approximately 3-5 days. At that time you will be re-evaluated in the office setting where the surgical dressings will be removed and the site will be inspected. Typically at this time the doctor will put a smaller dressing on the sites and allow you to get a shower. Additionally, you will be able to weight-bear to some degree with a removable walking cast. Instructions will be given on the daily care of the surgical sites as well as stretching exercises. Sutures are removed in two weeks and usually physical therapy is initiated.
At about the third week you will be weaned off the removable cast and placed in a well supportive shoe with gradual return to orthotics. Generally the doctor will follow your progress over the course of the year.
